Streamlining SMART survey processes in support of a high quality, nationally owned nutrition information system in Kenya

From 2013 onwards, the processes for conducting SMART surveys in Kenya were streamlined, harmonised and institutionalised under the coordination and leadership of the national Nutrition Information Technical Working Group (NITWG). This article highlights key actions taken to streamline processes, including the results and drivers for success.

Adaptations to SMART surveys in the context of COVID-19 in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh

Adaptations to the Standardized Monitoring and Assessment of Relief and Transitions (SMART) survey methodology and operations were made in the context of Cox’s Bazar refugee camps in Bangladesh during 2020 to enable data collection to continue in spite of the risk of COVID-19 transmission. This article highlights how the SMART Methodology guidance on resuming household-level surveys were adapted in Cox’s Bazar refugee camps Round-5 SMART assessment from November to December 2020.

Implementation of nutrition surveys using SMART methodology in sub-saharan Africa

SMART Methodology is widely used in sub-Saharan Africa by governments and partners to conduct timely nutrition surveys in all contexts and on a regular basis, often coinciding with seasonal variations, at national, sub-national and smaller-scale levels. The review found that 32 out of 45 countries had implemented SMART surveys between 2013 and 2015, contributing to the harmonisation of nutrition rapid assessment methods across the region.
