You need to record length if a child’s measure is < 87cm or age is <24months otherwise record height. Age would be sufficient as a criteria to decide whether to take length or height.
Yes, from the Extra menu you can access Palusibility check Mortality and Demography though not fully developed as the Plausibility check Anthropomentry.
February 8, 2016 at 7:41 am in reply to: Interpretation of SMART survey results for Programming #2063Hi Hassan,
MUAC is a good predictor of mortality among malnourished children, however, it shouldn’t be applied a solely criterion for acute malnutrition owing to its strong association with age, sex, stunting, and its low sensitivity to detect slim children as evidenced by previous studies irrespective of time and place. In your case WHZ would be a safer bet for programming. Recommendations are on course for prospective studies to come up with such combined prevalence for programming. A study by ACF on 16 cross-sectional surveys from South Sudan, Bangladesh, Chad and the Philippines found out that both indicators could only detect 28.5% of the malnourished children (https://nutritionj.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s12937-015-0074-4).
The Mortality Data Entry individual level is recommended over the data entry household, which is a summary of data collected per household. In data entry individual level, data for each household member is entered. Other than the Crude Death Rate, this option enables determination of;
1. Death rates for any age range.
2. Death rates by fixed age intervals.
3. Death rates by sex.In addition to the above, ENA produces confidence intervals, design effect for each mortality rate and demographic data such as age pyramids and migrations for the surveyed population.
The data entry individual level form can be obtained from ENA. From the Extras menu, Forms for Demography and Mortality option select SMART Standard form.
Hi Gero,
MEASURE (already pre-defined as l/h) is one of the four additional columns only used for relevant application. This column is only used if height (standing up) or length (lying down) of children aged above 2 and less than 2 respectively are taken against the protocol.
If a child’s length is supposed to be taken (ex. 20m) and height is recorded instead, under the MEASURE column, letter ‘h’ (Height) is entered and letter ‘l’ (Length) if vice versa.These entries enable ENA software to apply a correction factor for determination of the nutritional status of such cases correctly.
You could also consult the ENA manual for more details on application of the other 3 additional columns from the Complementary Tools and Resources https://smartmethodology.org/survey-planning-tools/smart-capacity-building-toolbox/Hi Ravi
Eligibility criteria for SMART Master Training include the following;
1. Have attended a SMART Manager training since 2013
2. Have managed a minimum of 3 SMART surveys from start to finish
3. Will be able to manage at least 1 SMART survey in 2016.
4. Will be available to co-facilitate 7 day SMART Manager level if called upon
We don’t have any such training planned for the remainder of 2015. The 2016 plans will be posted on the SMART Calendar (website) once finalized, keep on checking for the updates.-

The mortality data entry and analysis is dependent on the way mortality data was collected.
The options are Individual Level and Household Level Data entry. If in your case you collected data at Individual level, then it follows that data entry and analysis should be done at Individual level.
Whichever option you use to collect, enter and analyze mortality data, you should be able to obtain both U5MR and CMR. To obtain U5MR with Individual level entry, you need to select 5 years interval and attain the Results Individual Entry against 0-4 Years.
It would be helpful to read the ENA Software Manual (P 47-56) accessible at https://smartmethodology.org/survey-planning-tools/smart-emergency-nutrition-assessment/
The above applies when merging files as well; it is only possible to merge two different files if they share similarity in data collection/entry method applied.
The non-responsiveness on the two laptops could be due to settings, options and compatibility; the above guide will be of help.Mortality entry and analysis have only two options; data entry individual level and data entry household level. Only one option can be applied at a time for a given survey. In your case data entry was done at Individual level, therefore, the results are analyzed at individual level (Results Individual Level).
To ensure consistency with results of a single survey using different laptops, ensure you select similar age intervals upon confirmation in similarity of double data entry. We select 5 years interval to obtain U5 Death Rate (0-4 Years) while Overall analysis denotes CDR. For challenges with ENA, you could try the analysis using different laptops. Some issues could arise from settings and compatibility. Take note of any error message and share.
Information on any planned SMART Training will be shared on the website, keep on checking for such updates.
There will likely be a SMART Manager level training held late Fall 2015 in South Asia. Please keep checking the website for updates.
